Dust complaints caused by quarrying in the past year have doubled in the last year and residents say authorities need to do more in monitoring the situation. Environment Canterbury annual compliance monitoring report show that it received 304 dust complaints in the Christchurch-West Melton Water Management Zone for the 2014/2015 period – a 145 per cent increase from the last year. In the report, ECan staff said it had started a dust monitoring study in response to the increase. But residents living nearby the quarries on Christchurch’s western outskirts are unhappy

with ECan. Yaldhurst Rural Residents Association chairperson Bob Cross said he felt quarries got away with dust because ECan was not enforcing the resource consents. He said he often saw trucks coming out of the site uncovered with the dust blowing all over the place. However, ECan Monitoring and Compliance regional man-
ager Marty Mortiaux responded that it has been working closely with the residents and quarry operators. “The residents are supporting ECan’s three-month air quality monitoring programme.” Gilberthorpes Estate Resident Association secretary Kevin Bennett said the report didn’t surprise him. “I saw a lot of trucks going down the road last week all
loaded up. It was a windy day and these trucks probably had half their loads.” Mr Mortiaux said dust from trucks entering and leaving sites had been a problem in the past but had mitgated the problem by installing a wheel wash and sealing accessways. He said this had a positive result in reducing dust discharges as trucks leave and enter the quarry site.
But Riccarton-Wigram Community Board chairman Mike Mora said ECan’s enforcement team needed to “have a very close look at themselves”. “I think they are letting the environment down,” he said.

Halswell’s rapid population growth has residents calling for an urgent road infrastructure review because current ones are not meeting needs. Halswell Residents’ Association secretary David Hawke and member Ross McFarlane have asked for the an urgent review from the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board. They said rapid redevelopment in the south-west of the city had radically altered the nature of the traffic networkfrom quasi-rural to developed residential. Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck and board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton have asked for a city council staff investigation to be completed by July. Traffic congestion was also due to the neighbouring Selwyn district travelling via the area

The Council Speed Limit Review 2016 requires the city council to review the roads in the city and happens once every two-three years. “It really is the one opportunity to hold the city council to account about how they are doing traffic management around Halswell,” Mr Hawke said. Ms Broughton said the board is supportive of the residents. “Every time it comes up for a review we always argue these roads should have a lower speed limit,” she said. SEARCH WARRANTS Police executed search warrants on two Christchurch addresses last week. The search warrants were a result of the investigation into the assault of a lone man at the Riccarton Bus Lounge last month. A nineteen-year-old man was arrested and charged with assault. Two men aged 19 and 21 and three youths, two aged 15 and one aged 16 spoke with police and all will be charged with “wounding with intent”. All offenders will appear in the youth court today. ORIENTEERING COURSE The Peninsula and Plains Orienteers are putting a permanent course into the Halswell Quarry in late April/ early May and is looking for help from the community to do it. At present, 28 posts in the Halswell Quarry will be dug into the ground. The posts are going to be installed on Saturday, April 30. It runs a programme called Active Discoveries that cater for 18-35-year-olds with intellectual disabilities who wish to get active and make new friends. The group hopes to raise $10,000 for the new van on its ‘Givealittle’ page. The charity’s old van broke down and they are now fundraising for a new one so they can continue to take students on trips. It runs several programmes based on different levels of abilities. They run once a week throughout the school term ranging from hiking to rock climbing, kayaking and more. Name revealed for Breathing new life merged polytechs into Paeroa Reserve The merger of two polytechnics now has a name, the Ara Institute of Canterbury. The new name was announced last week after it was decided in November last year that Aoraki Polytechnic and the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology would merge. Ara, meaning arise or pathway in Maori, is the next stage in the over 200 year combined history of CPIT and Aoraki Polytechnic. Underneath the new institute’s name is the Maori phrase ‘ara rau, taumata rau’, which means ‘many pathways, many opportunities’. The Ara logo represents an upward journey of learning, while also showing Maori tukutuku panelling, which was traditionally used to decorate meeting houses. A plan has been put in place to extend the range of programmes and services and become a destination for national and international students.

A reserve will be transformed into a more people-friendly area by the Riccarton community. Landscape improvements are under way to improve water quality at Paeroa Reserve. Physical works are planned to be undertaken next month while planting will begin in May. Environment Canterbury has donated $50,000 to help cover the costs of cleaning up the area. The plans recently approved by the Riccarton-Wigram Community Board will include installing riffles which aerate the water increasing oxygen for stream life. Other plans for the Paeroa Reserve are installing a timber-viewing platform and interpretation panel to raise awareness for the importance of the water environment. Planting new trees, including fruit trees and native riparian to increase biodiversity and shading of the stream is also on the agenda. Reverend helps others fight Action Network, how did it come about? It was started by three people in the community, myself as one of lead facilitators. Basically we were there to speak on behalf of people struggling with their house being in the red zone, or other land issues including settlements with insurers. It actually ended up becoming a quite strong activist group, and any negotiations we tried to have were basically shut down. So in the end they forced the group to protest more to get people’s issues heard. How successful were those protests? We had varying success, in the

Well I’m 53-years-old. I’m married to Robyn, we’re about to have our 29th anniversary, she’s a medical scientist. I always say she’s the bright one. I have a Bachelor of Commerce and Accounting. I graduated from Canterbury University and the Christchurch Teachers College. I went on to teach at Waimea College, as well as St Bede’s College and Linwood High which is now Linwood College. I travelled overseas and backpacked around the Americas with my wife, then got a Bachelor of Theology in Auckland, and that was my training to become a minister. I actually grew up as a Roman Catholic and went to Xavier College, but later on became
a Baptist before becoming Anglican. Wow that’s quite a background. And do you have any children? Yes, we have three kids, Matthew our eldest is 25, Simon is 19, and Emily is 11. Matthew is a product manager at an electronics firm, Simon is doing his second year studying chemistry at Canterbury University, and Emily is at Banks Avenue School. I also love cycling, going to the gym and having fun with the family. We also have one grandchild, Matthew and his partner Paris have a boy called Jack, who is three and he is just beautiful. He loves going to pre-school and kindy, loves all the boys stuff, all the trucks and trees, he’s just got heaps of energy. Tell me about the Wider Earthquake Communities
early days we showed some insurance companies up for what they were doing and what they really were. Some of the things they were offering was just wrong. The Government seemed to be happy to sit back and Canterbury be devastated. That really concerned many of us who were looking to help those in the communities. So do you think it’s a lot better today? No.
Even as we look around today. (Earthquake Minister) Gerry Brownlee talks about the Margaret Mahy Family Playground more than anything else when he is talking about Christchurch’s success. It’s his No 1 defence for questions on the recovery. When you talk to homeowners you realise there are still thousands and thousands who are still locked in insurance battles and fighting for a fair deal. It was the reason WeCan was formed, to give a voice to those who couldn’t. And what was your particular role in the whole setup? I was the media spokesman throughout that time, through two and a half years. During that time I was working full time as a counsellor and a reverend as well. So at the start of 2014 I kind of realised it was time to leave WeCan. From there I decided to focus more on the insurance companies and helping others get through their battles, and only wanted fairness for both sides.

earthquake battles I never fought for more than a policy would honour, only what a policy offered. We just looked for a fair honouring. We weren’t trying to get people rich when they were only entitled to so much, and we’ve found that the insurance companies have respected that. There are no guiding rules to ensure insurance companies treat people fairly, which is ridiculous to be honest. Hasn’t the recovery gone on long enough already? Absolutely it has. The nature of this recovery for insurance companies is about spinning a line to get through the year, spreading the recovery over 20 years. To have private homeowners waiting for that long is plain disgraceful, it’s not about people it’s about ensuring the Government’s books are kept healthy. I just find it really interesting that we can paint all kinds of artwork throughout the city but can’t have all of our people in houses. Do you have any spare time at all? Yes of course! I’m a school counsellor at Middleton Grange School. I really enjoy working

one-on-one with adolescents and seeing them grow. Getting an understanding of what they’re going through is really important. I think I have the skills to help them, and I really enjoy seeing them feel empowered. I mean a lot of them are still finding themselves in life and gaining an awareness about the world around them, so finding their way in life can be quite
difficult. I’ve been through a lot in my own life so I can kind of pass that wisdom on in a way. I can imagine in a job like that, you’d meet a lot of interesting people, anyone stand out in particular? There are a few that kind of stand out. I remember I was helping some boys, one I seem to remember was at the age of nine, and he was caught up in
his parents’ divorce. He was really quite an angry young man, and was really struggling with life in general, with his behaviour spinning out of control. In one session I asked him to paint a picture, and he painted what he said he always wanted to have, which was a Holden car and a girlfriend on his arm. That’s very cute.
Yes, it was. After he left school he sent me a picture on Facebook of him and his girlfriend and his Ford car which he had saved up to get, and he said he was going to get a Holden. I thought that was amazing. I’ve been involved with counselling since 1995, when I helped start up the Delta Community Support Trust. I’m sure on the other side of that spectrum though, there would be times where someone is asking for help and you wouldn’t know how to help them? It can be quite disheartening if you find a student that you can’t work out the thing that they are telling you is wrong. And that can stem from a whole number of things. It’s very hard even for a youth mental health worker, because they can also really struggle to help someone like that. It can be very sad to see teens on medication for mental illnesses as well. The stress of the quakes has been immense for some kids. Especially those who are coming from homes that are still unsettled. We’ll see that for many years to come I think.

Gymnasts off to Pacific champs Three talented gymnasts from the Riccarton and Halswell area will be flying across the globe to compete in the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championship. The Christchurch School of Gymnastics will be sending four gymnasts to compete in the competition to be held next weekend. Riccarton residents Charlotte Sullivan and Mackenzie Slee along
with Halswell’s Courtney McGregor will be travelling to the event. The team will be heading to Everett, Washington to compete against gymnasts from around the world. This event serves as a warm-up meet for the Rio Olympic Test Event which follows on April 16-19 in Brazil. Courtney said she will use this opportunity as her final hit-out before she
travels to Rio to attempt to get a placing for women’s gymnastics. She is looking forward to competing since she has learnt more difficult vault routines. “I am looking forward to competing my new second vault – I added 0.30 difficulty so now I will be more competitive.” Hoon Hay resident Stella Ashcroft, 13, will also be joining the team to compete for the first time.

A look inside The Court Theatre Hillmorton High School drama students had the opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes at The Court Theatre last week. The students visited the costume department, saw the dressing rooms, the large range of the theatre props as well as the theatre’s very own workshop. Deputy principal Eleanor Sim said the students had the privilege of being shown around
by one of the witches from The Court Theatre’s production of Macbeth which has just finished its season.

Effective treatment for many types of pain
C
omplementary medicine is becoming increasingly sought after in New Zealand as people become aware of the many different methods of treating pain and ill health that are available here. Christchurch-based Chinese health practitioner Lan Xiao has developed a method of treatment, which she says has as an immediate affect on a wide variety of pains and health conditions. It is known as ‘acupuncture without needles’. Lan describes it as being similar to reflexology in that the problem area on the body is determined through pressure, but is much more accurate. Trained as a medical practitioner in China, Lan came to New Zealand in 1992 and began practising acupuncture in 1995. From that discipline she created her acupuncture without needles, and uses it to treat people of all ages with many different types of pain in all parts of the body. This can include arthritic pain, MS, and pain from injury. “For example, the treatment has been very successful for people who have painful joints caused by arthritis,” Lan says. Acupuncture without needles is also effective in restoring energy levels,
she says. “As people age their energy is reduced, and this can lead to other health problems. The acupuncture without needles treatment is like the body’s battery being charged up again, so their energy levels are restored, which in turn helps overcome their health problems.” Lan also uses it to treat depression and anxiety, and says it can help with addiction problems as well. “After the treatment the person has no cravings – because it treats the cause of the addiction.” She says the results are immediate, though people may need several treatments, depending on the extent of their health problem, and while it is slightly painful for few moments, everyone can tolerate it.
